Words every beginner should know
- Paper trading
- Practising trades with virtual money in a simulated environment. Results do not involve any real gain or loss.
- Candlestick
- A chart bar showing the open, high, low and close price for a period. Green usually means the close was above the open.
- Market order
- An instruction to buy or sell immediately at the best available price. Fast, but the price is not guaranteed.
- Limit order
- An instruction to buy or sell only at a specified price or better. The price is controlled, but the order may not fill.
- Stop-loss
- A pre-decided price at which a losing position is exited to limit further loss.
- Target
- A pre-decided price at which a winning position is exited to book the planned gain.
- Intraday
- A position opened and closed within the same trading day.
- Delivery
- Buying shares to hold beyond the trading day, in your (virtual) holdings.
- Leverage
- Controlling a large position with a smaller amount of margin. It magnifies both gains and losses.
- Futures contract
- An agreement to buy or sell an asset at a fixed price on a future date, traded in fixed lot sizes.
- Call option
- A contract giving the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy at the strike price before or on expiry.
- Put option
- A contract giving the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to sell at the strike price before or on expiry.
- Strike price
- The fixed price at which an option can be exercised.
- Premium
- The price paid to buy an option. Option buyers can lose the entire premium.
- At-the-money (ATM)
- The strike price closest to the current price of the underlying asset.
- Open interest (OI)
- The number of outstanding derivative contracts that have not been closed or settled.
- Time decay (theta)
- The fall in an option’s value as expiry approaches, all else being equal.
- P&L
- Profit and loss. Realised P&L comes from closed positions; unrealised P&L is on open positions.
Habits worth building in simulation
Plan the exit first
Decide your stop-loss and target before you place any order.
Size small
Risk only a small, fixed share of your capital on any one idea.
Keep a journal
Write down why you entered and what you learnt when you exited.
Ignore “sure-shot” tips
No one can guarantee returns. Verify any adviser on sebi.gov.in.
Practise first. Decide later.
